Anti-Terrorism / Force Protection (AT/FP) Afloat
Anti-Terrorism / Force Protection (AT/FP) Afloat is the area of defense against asymmetric attacks against deployed naval assets. The terrorist bombing of the USS Cole in October, 2000 highlighted the need for greater security in this area. The United States Navy and Coast Guard are actively developing systems and procedures to better protect our ships and personnel against these attacks.
Metron is supporting the Navy's efforts in this arena through quantitative analysis of defensive system performance against a variety of threat types. This analysis serves to identify performance sensitivities and helps to direct future development investment.
Metron is performing analysis on an ongoing basis related to such cutting-edge systems as the Integrated Anti-Swimmer System (IAS), Shipboard Protection System (SPS) and the navy's newest warfighting ship, the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS).
ATFP-1 is a high fidelity discrete-event Monte Carlo simulation of the AT/FP afloat scenario which models the entire detect-to-engage sequence at the level of individual systems and command decisions. Each subsystem's performance, from sensor detection models to weapon accuracy, is simulated through a combination of empirical data and physics-based modeling. Stochastic models are used for threat navigation, sensor performance, and engagement results. The model explicitly accounts for rules of engagement and command-chain latencies. ATFP-1 is able to simulate any number and combination of air, surface, and subsurface threats against a single target.
