  • 📡 📕 Congratulations to Metron Distinguished Fellow, Dr. Kristine Bell on her recent contribution to the Springer Nature Group publication of “Women in Telecommunications .” Kristine, collaborators Sevgi Zübeyde Gürbüz and Maria Sabrina Greco authored chapter seven, " Integrating AI into Radar System Design: Next-Generation Cognitive Radars." As part of the series on Women in Engineering and Science, the publication showcases technical excellence, expertise, and non-traditional perspectives that enable innovations to advance our world. 🏆 Kristine was also featured for her valuable innovations in cognitive radar in the section titled "Twenty-First-Century Women in Telecommunications."

    #WomeninTelecommunications
Women in Telecommunications provides a breadth of innovative and impactful research in the field of #telecommunications led by women investigators. Topics covered include satellite communications, wireless communications, data compression, #remotesensing, and #quantum internet. For more information: https://lnkd.in/ev6jh9b5

    Chapter Seven Sample
At the core of cognitive radar systems lies the “perception–action cycle”—a feedback mechanism within the transceiver architecture that enables the radar system to learn information about a target and its environment and adapt its transmissions to optimize one or more missions (e.g., detection, tracking, classification) according to the desired goal. There are two main approaches for implementing this learning–decision–action mechanism in a radar: (1) a Bayesian approach, which relies on prior distributions and knowledge-aided models of the environment as derived from past measurements, and (2) a machine learning approach, which synthesizes data-driven action with knowledge of sensor and signal models. This chapter will provide an in-depth overview of the concept, architecture, and methods for modeling cognitive processes in a radar system. Both Bayesian and machine learning approaches will be discussed in detail, with working examples given from tracking and spectrum sensing problems. Challenges to advancing the current state-of-the-art will be discussed as insights are provided into future research directions.

Metron Inc. Distinguished Fellow, Dr. Kristine L. Bell, Ph.D.'s expertise spans statistical signal processing and multi-target tracking with a current focus on cognitive and fully adaptive radar, #sonar, and #electronicwarfare systems. She and her team’s cognitive radar expertise have developed a series of projects sponsored by the United States Air Force and the US Navy.

  • 🌊 Underwater sensing and signal processing are fundamental areas of Metron Inc.'s core capabilities. The recent work by John Lipor, John Gebbie, and Martin Siderius, "On the limits of distinguishing seabed types via ambient acoustic sound," published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, is an excellent example of our team's commitment to solving real-world challenges facing our customers each-and-every day. The article presents an approach to distinguish between seabed parameters or sediment types using wind driven ambient sound as a source for a passive sonar array. In addition, the discussion provides an innovative way to evaluate the impact of less well-behaved sound sources, such as ship traffic or biologic activity, providing greater accuracy and identification to support underwater operations.

    Highlights: 🌐 🚢 🐋

🔹 The recent interest in applying machine learning techniques to acoustics, has delivered promising results displayed for both geoacoustic inversion and seabed classification. However, training such algorithms requires the curation of large datasets and a priori knowledge of which seabed types may be encountered.

🔹 A theoretical analysis of optimally distinguishing among environmental parameters from ocean ambient sound is included. Recent approaches to this problem either focus on parameter estimation or attempt to classify the environment into one of many known types through machine learning. This classification problem is framed as one of hypothesis testing on the received ambient sound snapshots in which the Multi-Dimensional Ambient Noise Model (MDANM) is leveraged for the creation of synthetic datasets.

🔹 Analysis of the Kullback-Leibler divergence shows the dependence on the signal-to-noise ratio, the underlying signal subspaces, and the distribution of eigenvalues of the respective covariance matrices. This analysis provides insights into both when and why successful hypothesis testing is possible.

🔹 Experiments demonstrate that our analysis provides insight as to why certain environmental parameters are more difficult to distinguish than others.

  • Exciting Collaboration at Annual STEM Day with Girl Scouts

Metron recently had the privilege of joining the Girl Scouts of Oregon and SW Washington for their annual STEM Day at the Salem Convention Center. Joining forces with about 80 other organizations, we set out to inspire young minds in the realms of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Our interactive booth featured the versatile Adafruit Circuit Playground Express circuit boards, perfect for hands-on learning. The girls, from K-12, embraced the challenge of programming these boards using Microsoft MakeCode—a user-friendly, block-style language designed especially for budding programmers. Their task? To make the boards react to physical actions with lights and sounds.

The fun didn’t stop there! We upped the ante with a Neopixel light strip and a small robot, both controlled with the Circuit Playground boards. It was a joy to see the older girls tackle the robot challenge, and everyone loved customizing their favorite LED colors and picking goofy sounds.

This event wasn’t just about programming; it was a celebration of young talent and the potential of the next generation in STEM. We're proud to support such initiatives and can't wait for what the future holds!

  • Metron Inc. has officially kicked off our company-wide “Tenth Innovation Tournament,” designed to empower our employees, foster team building, and promote a culture of continuous learning. 🎇

The “Innovation Tournament” 🏆 allows any employee to pitch an idea they would like to pursue above and beyond their current work tasks. They compete for company-sponsored R&D funding over a six-month period to pursue their passion project. Projects are not required to produce a product or tool that yields financial gain for Metron; the goal is to provide an outlet for Metron employees’ creativity and explore technologies outside of our funded work. Also, a special bonus is given to those teams that include an early-in-career (EIC) person. The Innovation Fund was the brainchild of Metron’s CEO Van Gurley and is led by Lawrence Stone to provide a channel for employees to pursue their innovative technical ideas or dream projects. This friendly competition whittles down submissions to a final list of winning proposals announced in November. 🗓

The Innovation Fund is one of the many benefits of working here at Metron. Because we firmly believe that by investing in our people, we cultivate an environment where innovation thrives and new ideas take flight.
